Demi Lovato Explains Why She Performed “Heart Attack” at a Heart Disease Charity Event.

Demi Lovato has finally addressed one of the most viral — and controversial — moments of her recent career: her decision to perform “Heart Attack” at the American Heart Association’s 2024 Go Red for Women event. The choice of song sparked widespread backlash and countless memes, with many online users pointing out the ironic contrast between the song’s title and the event’s focus on cardiovascular health.

A Performance That Took Over the Internet

Lovato, who has been the subject of many viral moments over the years, found herself at the center of social media commentary once again when clips of the performance began circulating. While some viewers were amused, others questioned the appropriateness of the song choice.

At the time, Lovato’s representatives defended the performance, calling it “a beautiful moment” and explaining that the song was chosen to highlight the connection between emotional and physical well-being.

Now, Lovato herself is setting the record straight.

“They Asked Me to Sing It”

During an appearance on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on March 19, the singer revealed that the decision wasn’t hers.

“I want to say they asked me to sing that,” Lovato said. “Because I flagged it beforehand and was like, ‘Um, isn’t this like not the vibe?’ And they were like, ‘No, they want to hear it.’”

She added that despite her concerns, organizers insisted on the track — and when criticism erupted online, she felt misunderstood.

“People were like, ‘Why would she sing that?’ And I’m like, ‘Y’all, it wasn’t me — I flagged it.’”

Organizers Defended the Choice

Back in 2024, Lovato’s representative told Entertainment Weekly that the performance was meant to underscore the “mind-heart connection” and empower the women in attendance.

According to the rep, Lovato introduced the song with a heartfelt explanation about its personal significance and its thematic ties to emotional vulnerability, resilience, and healing.

Onstage, Lovato said:

“This song has many parallels for me, my journey, and a reminder for all of us in the room just how strong the mind-heart-body connection truly is.”

A Personal History With Heart Trauma

Lovato’s connection to the topic is deeply personal. In her 2021 documentary Dancing with the Devil, she revealed that she suffered a heart attack and three strokes following a near-fatal overdose in 2018.

“My doctors said that I had five to ten more minutes [to live],” she recalled.

Given her own experience with cardiac trauma, the performance carried a layer of meaning that many online critics may not have realized.
