Ed Sheeran Breaks Down on Stage, Condemns Gaza Crisis and Addresses Macklemore Tour Fallout.
Ed Sheeran returned to the stage in Philadelphia on Sept. 19 for his first show since the dramatic removal of Macklemore from his Loop Tour — and the British singer didn’t hold back. Visibly emotional, Sheeran delivered a raw, heartfelt speech about the controversy, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the pressure he has faced behind the scenes.
“I’m making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry”
Sheeran told the crowd he never wanted to be an activist musician, but recent events forced him into the center of a global political storm. “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions and I am making mistakes and I’m so, so sorry,” he said, acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans and fellow artists.
He described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate,” adding that the loss of civilian and children’s lives has “broken his heart.” At the same time, he emphasized the pain of the Jewish community following the Oct. 7 Nova music festival attack, calling it “horrific.”

A warning about censorship in the music industry
Sheeran expressed deep concern about venues attempting to pre‑approve performers’ content, calling it a dangerous precedent. “This should never happen in the free world,” he said, hinting at the pressure placed on him by stadium owners who allegedly demanded Macklemore’s removal.

The stadium ultimatum
Macklemore, who had been scheduled for eight more U.S. shows, claimed that Robert Kraft — owner of Gillette Stadium — told Sheeran he would not be allowed to perform if Macklemore remained on the tour. According to the rapper, Kraft then rallied other stadium owners to issue a collective ultimatum.
Sheeran later confirmed that multiple venues threatened to pull his shows, stating that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter, not him.

Mass artist walkout
Following Macklemore’s removal, several other acts — including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga — withdrew from the tour in solidarity. Finneas wrote: “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed. I stand with Palestine.”
Macklemore’s response and $1 million donation
Macklemore announced he would donate his net tour earnings — $1 million — to organizations supporting Palestinians, including the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Medical Aid for Palestinians. He also challenged Kraft to match the donation. Kraft later said Sheeran asked him to contribute $2 million toward humanitarian aid.
Sheeran: “I’m listening and learning”
Sheeran told fans he has been speaking with people “across the spectrum” to understand how he can help victims of the conflict. “I do not know enough,” he admitted, promising to continue learning and engaging.
Despite the turmoil, Sheeran ended his speech with gratitude: “This concert is still a place where everyone is welcome… even if you disagree on everything, you can still agree on singing these songs.”
