Robert Eggers Takes On ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as Focus Features Wins Fierce Bidding War.

Robert Eggers is stepping into new — yet timeless — territory. After exploring witches, sailors losing their minds, Viking vengeance, vampires and now werewolves, the filmmaker is preparing to tackle one of storytelling’s most enduring creatures: teenage love.

Focus Features has secured Eggers’ upcoming adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, beating out A24, Sony and Warner Bros. in a competitive bidding battle. The project will be Eggers’ next film after Werwulf, set for release this Christmas.

A Shakespeare Adaptation in Olde English

Sources say Eggers plans to have actors speak in Olde English, staying true to the linguistic texture of the era — a signature move for a director known for obsessive historical authenticity. Expect a raw, archaic, atmospheric take on Shakespeare’s tragedy, far removed from modern reinterpretations.

Eggers’ version will revisit the doomed romance between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, two young lovers caught between warring families in Verona. Written in the 1590s, the play remains one of Shakespeare’s most adapted works, with iconic film versions including:

  • Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 classic, a lush, traditional retelling.
  • Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 cult hit, a neon‑drenched modern spin starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

Eggers now joins this lineage — likely with a darker, more visceral vision.

A Deal Worth Over $70 Million

While exact numbers weren’t disclosed, insiders report the deal sits in the high‑seventy‑million range, covering filmmaker fees, talent costs and production budget. It’s a significant investment for a prestige, period-driven project.

Eggers and Focus: A Proven Partnership

Though Eggers isn’t formally tied to Focus Features, the studio has released all his films to date, including The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and Nosferatu. Their collaboration continues with Werwulf, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp — both returning from Nosferatu.

Werwulf is set for a Christmas Day theatrical debut, marking another stylized, atmospheric horror entry from the director.

What Comes Next?

Casting for Romeo and Juliet remains under wraps, but given Eggers’ track record, expect intense performances, immersive world-building and a bold reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
