A Controlled Return to Alcohol
During the interview, Pitt offered the journalist a glass of wine. When asked whether the alcohol was only for guests, he responded with surprising honesty:
“I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon.”
Pitt explained that he now drinks “in a more restrained manner,” acknowledging that he has tested his limits a few times:
“I got overconfident a couple times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities.”
He added that he can enjoy a few glasses, but must remain disciplined:
“I can have a few. But I can’t have a lot. I have to be professional about it.”
The Sobriety Journey That Began in 2016
Pitt’s decision to quit drinking in 2016 followed his highly publicized split from Angelina Jolie. The divorce came shortly after an alleged dispute on a private plane, during which alcohol was reportedly involved. The couple shares six children.
Over the years, Pitt has spoken openly about his struggles with alcohol:
- In 2017, he told GQ that he couldn’t recall “a day” after college when he wasn’t drinking or smoking.
- He admitted he had stopped everything except alcohol when he became a father — until he realized in 2016 that he was “boozing too much.”
- In 2019, he described his year and a half in a 12‑step program to The New York Times, calling it a “safe space” where honesty and vulnerability were encouraged.

Pitt has also publicly thanked Bradley Cooper for helping him get sober, saying during a 2020 awards speech:
“I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier ever since.”
What His Admission Means Now
Pitt’s latest revelation isn’t framed as a relapse, but rather as a recalibration. He acknowledges his limits, recognizes the risks, and insists on moderation. It’s a rare moment of transparency from one of Hollywood’s biggest stars — and a reminder that sobriety, for many, is a complex, evolving journey.
