The Video That Changed Everything: “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
Nirvana’s meteoric rise began with the 1991 release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a single that catapulted Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl from underground favorites to global superstars. The music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, became a cultural earthquake.
Set in a chaotic high‑school pep rally inspired by Over the Edge and Rock ’n’ Roll High School, the video captured the raw energy of youth rebellion. Shot on August 17, 1991, in Culver City, it featured around 150 extras recruited from a casting call at The Roxy. After hours of filming and hearing the song on repeat, the crowd’s explosive energy became the video’s defining element.
Bayer later admitted he had no idea the project would become iconic: at the time, the charts were dominated by M.C. Hammer, Guns N’ Roses, and Metallica — few expected a punk‑leaning Seattle trio to rewrite music history.
Today, the video has surpassed 2 billion views on YouTube, and Nevermind has sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

Love, MTV, and a Moment of Intimacy
Courtney Love has shared vivid memories of watching the video with Cobain — first in a Days Inn in Chicago, during what she described as a tender moment early in their relationship. Another viewing, in Minneapolis, coincided with the night their daughter Frances Bean was conceived. As Love recalled, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was on MTV “every five minutes.”
A Legacy That Only Grows
Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994, at age 27, ending Nirvana’s run — but not its influence. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, and Nevermind ranked No. 6 on Rolling Stone’s 2023 list of the 500 greatest albums ever.
In March 2026, Cobain’s left‑handed 1960s Fender Mustang — the guitar featured in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video — sold at Christie’s for $6.907 million, becoming the most expensive Cobain guitar ever auctioned.
