Manchester United have opened talks with several former players as they search for a caretaker head coach to guide the team until the end of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emerged as the leading candidate, with club officials also speaking to Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy about the temporary role.
The list of potential caretakers expanded further when Darren Fletcher was asked to lead United in Wednesday’s match against Burnley at Turf Moor. The 41‑year‑old, who will serve as interim head coach for that game, has also held discussions with the club about continuing in the position.
United dismissed Ruben Amorim on Monday and intend to appoint a caretaker before beginning the search for a long‑term successor in the summer.

Solskjaer, who managed United from 2018 to 2021, is reportedly eager to return. The Norwegian initially arrived as an interim replacement for José Mourinho and oversaw a strong resurgence that earned him the job permanently. His spell included third‑ and second‑place Premier League finishes before a poor run in his third season led to his departure.
With a 54% win rate across 168 matches, Solskjaer brings more managerial experience than Carrick, Fletcher or Van Nistelrooy. Carrick briefly took charge after Solskjaer’s exit, recording two wins and a draw before leaving when Ralf Rangnick arrived. The former midfielder later managed Middlesbrough and is currently available.
Van Nistelrooy, meanwhile, stepped in after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in 2024, earning three wins and a draw from four matches. He later had a short spell at Leicester City before departing in 2025.
Manchester United are expected to make a decision soon as they look to stabilise the team for the remainder of the campaign.
