Jane Fonda to Star in Film Adaptation of The Correspondent by Virginia Evans.

Bestselling 2025 debut novel heads to the big screen.

One of 2025’s most talked‑about literary debuts is officially getting the Hollywood treatment. The Correspondent, Virginia Evans’ breakout novel that spent 19 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and surpassed one million copies sold worldwide, is being adapted into a feature film — with Jane Fonda set to star.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate secured the adaptation rights after a competitive bidding war involving seven studios. Fonda will also produce the film alongside Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures Media. Cat Vasko has been tapped to write the screenplay and will serve as an executive producer together with Evans.

A story built on letters, memory, and long‑awaited forgiveness

Evans’ novel centers on Sybil Van Antwerp, a retired lawyer who makes sense of her life through the letters she writes — to loved ones, to admired figures, and to one particular person who never receives the messages she drafts. Her quiet routine is disrupted when unexpected letters begin arriving, forcing her to confront a painful chapter from her past.

As the official synopsis explains, when Sybil receives correspondence from someone she once knew, she is compelled to revisit old wounds. Only by allowing a long‑written, never‑sent letter to finally be read can she move forward and find the forgiveness she has long avoided.

A creative team eager to bring the novel to life

Lieberman expressed his excitement about the project, calling the book “a phenomenon” and describing the opportunity to collaborate with Fonda, Lionsgate, and Vasko as “a thrilling honor.” He added that the team is eager for audiences to experience the same emotional impact that captivated readers.

Lionsgate president Erin Westerman echoed the enthusiasm, noting that Sybil’s journey resonated deeply with the studio’s team.

Lieberman is no stranger to literary adaptations — he recently produced The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling thriller and starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried.
