Meryl Streep Jokes She’ll Be “on a Gurney” Before The Devil Wears Prada 2Press Tour Ends.
Meryl Streep is proving once again that even the most glamorous global press tour can’t dull her sharp sense of humor. While appearing on Good Morning America on Monday, April 20, the 76‑year‑old actress joked that the whirlwind promotional campaign for The Devil Wears Prada 2 feels endless — and that she may not survive it without medical assistance.

A Press Tour That Never Ends
Streep told the hosts that since the tour kicked off on March 30, she has already traveled to Mexico City, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai. The constant time‑zone hopping has left her in a surreal rhythm: “I was in Shanghai, I didn’t even have to fix my clock because now it’s 8:15 at night. It’s amazing,” she said.
But the journey is far from over. “We’re only halfway done. I’ll be on a gurney after it,” she joked. “We’re going to London next and then L.A. — and then rehab or something.”
When the hosts mentioned the upcoming New York City premiere, Streep buried her face in her hands and groaned, “Oh my god, really? I’ll never be done.”

The Impact of a Cultural Classic
Despite the exhaustion, Streep said the most rewarding part of the tour has been meeting fans whose lives were shaped by the original 2006 film. “I think I must have met 200 young women journalists over the course of this global tour,” she said. Many told her the movie inspired them to pursue journalism, embrace fashion or simply have more fun with their careers.
She added that the sequel retains the optimism and energy that made the first film a cultural touchstone.

What The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is About
Based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel, the original film followed Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), an aspiring journalist who becomes assistant to the formidable Miranda Priestly (Streep), editor‑in‑chief of the fictional fashion magazine Runway.
The sequel shifts focus to Priestly as she navigates the decline of traditional magazine publishing. She finds herself at odds with Emily (Emily Blunt), now a powerful executive at a luxury conglomerate controlling the advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs.
The cast also includes Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen and Conrad Ricamora.
A Sequel That Almost Didn’t Happen
Streep revealed that although the studio wanted a sequel immediately after the first film’s success, the creative team waited years for the right script. “They were surprised it was a hit because it was a chick flick, and they never think those will do any business,” she said. “But we had to wait, wait, wait, wait, wait till the right script came.”
Fans Are Eager — Even the Ones She Didn’t Expect
Streep admitted she was surprised by the level of anticipation surrounding the sequel, especially since she doesn’t use social media. “Kids were waiting, women were waiting, gay men were waiting — and regular men were waiting,” she said with a laugh. “This was the first movie I’ve ever done that straight men came up and said, ‘I know how you feel in this movie.’”
Release Date
The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters on May 1.
