After his first season as a Napoli player in what ended with the Serie A Player of the Year award and Napoli’s historic league title, some in Napoli began to mutter that Scott McTominay had a similar impact on Napoli as Diego Maradona. Both were heavily involved in the Serie A title, but the comparisons of course stop there. The Scot knows he can never match the icon on and off the pitch, but the former Manchester United player knows how best to pay tribute to the late champion.

Diego Amando Maradona. For many fans, no one will match the 1,65-meter-tall giant. Tuesday marked the fifth anniversary of the Argentine’s death. Napoli did it the way Maradona himself would have wanted it.

Maradona wore the Napoli shirt 258 games from 1984 to 1991, the Argentine helped win two Italian championships and put Napoli on the map in Italy – and the world.

Tuesday was the fifth anniversary of Maradona’s death, Napoli went to the Champions League with a 2-0 victory against Qarabag FK at home. Antonio Conte puts into words the very special day.

-It was a special night for Napoli and for the Neapolitans. Maradona represents something that is difficult to explain if you are not from Naples. We wanted to honor this day, which is sad, considering that it is the fifth anniversary of his death, but there was a fantastic energy, says Conte after the match with the first goal by Scott McTominay.

Maradona would have smiled.
