Cynthia Erivo Addresses Racial Undertones in “Bodyguard” Jokes After Red Carpet Incident.

In a recent interview with Variety, Cynthia Erivo spoke candidly about the wave of online jokes that followed her protective reaction during a red carpet incident involving her Wicked co‑star Ariana Grande. When an intruder approached Grande at the event, Erivo instinctively stepped in — a moment that quickly went viral. But the internet’s response, which framed her as Grande’s “bodyguard,” revealed something deeper and more troubling.

“It was about how I look”

Erivo explained that the jokes were not harmless fun but rooted in long-standing stereotypes about Black women and their bodies.

“I think that we haven’t really come to terms with the insidious nature of how we view Black women. And I’m sure people will read this and think, ‘Oh, for goodness’ sake, it’s not about that.’ But it is. Because that’s what was being made fun of. It was my physique; it was my shape; it was the fact that I was bald; it was about what I looked like.”

She emphasized that the assumptions people made — that she was larger, stronger, or somehow assigned a protective role — were not random. They were tied to how society often perceives Black women: through a lens that strips away softness and imposes strength, dominance, or aggression.

A double standard in plain sight

Erivo also noted that the reaction would likely have been different if the physical dynamics between the two actresses were reversed.

“I would hazard a guess that it would not have been the same had it been the other way around.”

Her point highlights a broader cultural pattern: when Black women appear assertive or physically capable, they are often cast into roles of guardianship or toughness, whether they choose them or not.

A conversation that needed to happen

The actress’s comments have sparked widespread discussion about the subtle — and not-so-subtle — ways racial bias shows up in pop culture and online discourse. Many fans and commentators have praised Erivo for naming a problem that is often dismissed or minimized.

Her reflections serve as a reminder that even seemingly lighthearted jokes can reinforce harmful narratives. By speaking openly, Erivo has pushed the conversation forward, urging audiences to think more critically about the assumptions they make and the stereotypes they perpetuate.
