Aqua Announces Breakup After Nearly 30 Years in Music.

Aqua, the Danish Eurodance trio behind the global 1997 smash hit “Barbie Girl”, has officially announced that they are ending their run as a live band. The news came on May 18, when the group shared an emotional statement on Instagram reflecting on their nearly three‑decade career.

A Farewell Filled With Gratitude

In their announcement, Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, and Søren Rasted expressed deep appreciation for the fans who supported them since the mid‑90s. They wrote that Aqua had given them the chance to “experience more than we ever dared to dream of,” recalling years of touring, meeting fans around the world, and performing for millions.

The group emphasized that ending the band now felt like the right moment — a way to protect what they had built together while their bond and love for the music remained strong.

From “Barbie Girl” to Global Fame

Aqua burst onto the international music scene in 1997 with their debut album Aquarium, which included the unforgettable hit “Barbie Girl.” The song became a cultural phenomenon, topping charts across Europe and beyond with its playful lyrics and bubblegum‑dance sound.

Its success wasn’t without controversy. In 2000, Mattel, the company behind Barbie, sued Aqua’s label, claiming the song damaged the doll’s image. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2002, with the court ruling that the track was a protected parody — a decision that later became a notable case in entertainment law.

A Surprising Comeback in 2023

Aqua’s popularity surged again in 2023 when Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled “Barbie Girl” for their hit “Barbie World,” featured in the blockbuster Barbie film. The renewed attention brought Aqua two Grammy nominations, a U.S. tour, and a performance spot on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

Keyboardist Søren Rasted described the resurgence as “out‑of‑this‑world fantastic,” marking one of the most unexpected comebacks of the decade.

A Lasting Legacy

With over 30 million records sold, Aqua remains one of Denmark’s most successful musical acts. Their colorful, high‑energy style helped define late‑90s pop culture, and “Barbie Girl” continues to be one of the most recognizable songs of its era.

Though the group is stepping away from live performances, their influence — and their place in pop history — is secure.
